Cannabis Decriminalized: What Does The Research Tell Us?

January 11, 2018

Cannabis was recently legalized in Oregon for recreational use.  Interestingly, follow-up research showed that increased availability did not see an increase in the number of young people who used the drug.  But what it did find was that heavier usage occurred in those young people already using the drug when it became legal to do so.  This reflects similar patterns in the UK, where legal highs tended to have the most impact on those who were already drug involved, rather than creating a new population of drug users.  It supports the idea that certain young people with certain risk profiles remain particularly vulnerable to substance misuse problems.  To read a review of the study, click here.
