Practical Management of ADHD

ADHD represent a complex neurodiverse profile that shares a high rate of overlap with other poor impulse disorders such as Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Autism & Borderline Personality Disorder.  The impact of poor impulse control can also lead to greater risk of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.  Studies have found that people with ADHD have double the likelihood of developing problems with substance abuse, particularly alcohol, compared to children without ADHD.

 

This course will define the key features of ADHD and explore its relationship to other presentations.  Exploring the current understanding of the neuroscience behind ADHD, it will highlight key challenges of providing effective treatment.  The course will explore practical psycho-social strategies to support young people manage key cognitive functions.  This will start by supporting people to establish basic routines regarding sleep, diet and exercise.  The course will then look at the need to reshape environments to be less distracting and provide a range of interventions to support young people too address working memory, time blindness, emotional dysregulation and impulsive behaviours.  Whilst the core focus of the train pertains to ADHD, these skills will be helpful to those who experience a wide range of poor impulse related difficulties.

Who is This Course For?:  This course will be very helpful to a wide range of professionals whose work brings them into contact with ADHD.  This would include specialist and non-specialist youth workers, employment services, schools and college welfare teams, drug and alcohol services as well as those working in the Justice System and mental health.  It may also be relevant to those in highly specialised areas such as enhanced foster care services.

The aim of the course is to equip practitioners with the psychological skills to support people manage the core symptoms of ADHD and related poor impulse control disorders.   By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to: 

 

  • Understand the core features of ADHD and how they can change across the life course.

  • Describe how ADHD affects the Executive Functioning of the brain

  • Assess priorities for targeting the most relevant intervention

  • Address deficits in Working Memory

  • Improve attention and concentration

  • Reduce emotional dysregulation and impulse control
