The Therapeutic Alliance has always been found to be the central driver of outcomes in treatment studies, regardless of modality. But is there something beneath this which is more immediate and more important? This might be the"real relationship" between practitioner and client. Whilst many approaches have emphasized that motivation emerges in relationships, such as Motivational Interviewing, there are few studies that look at the detail of this.
