Scott Miller has forwarded this interesting study of the use of 'spin' in studies of talking cures effectiveness. Whilst conflicts of interest in the research submitted by the pharmaceutical industry has been hotly discussed, scant attention has been paid to the bias that appears in the research of psychologists researching the effectiveness of psychological therapies. "Allegiance Bias" occurs when psychologists test their own modalities, which invariably show more positive results than when independent teams run similar trials. However, conflicts of interest are rarely reported. An Open Access review published in the British Medical Journal investigates these issues in depth with some interesting findings and recommendations.
